Sewoon Arcade
An adventure to an unknown location - we missed our first bus but adventure always starts slow!
Into the UnknOWN!!!!
11am, a time where I should be suffering backache in bed, I stand before this grotesquely large infrastructure. The wind breezes by as my group stands off to the side, trying to get the best photos.
I move with a few to the right hand side and feel it - water. The sky, bright and clear blue, does not answer our questions as to where this water is coming from. Above us, standing taller than 5'5" is a steel plank, spraying droplets of water to the ground (ft Rachel running away)It turns out that they were planting little plants here, the species? Given that I have never taken a herbology class nor do I know what plants look like, I would guess that this is a plant. There was a mini guy out of his pot so I gently put him back but soon after I realized there was a staff person looking at us... Did I do something illegal?
believe that it was leaking water)
they had a mini projector with some seats. It looked like it was still slightly under construction or maybe it was raining yesterday (ft teammates taking a closer inspection)
The front of the Makercity Sewoon, as noted by the giant bold lettering on the top. The bottom part seemed to be an information center but I did not dare to go closer because there was a staff member (off camera) and my Korean = 0
There must be some sort of event happening....
Ready Up Player One (But it's the Lv 2)
There is a transformer (I have never seen transformers so I have no idea how accurate my previous statement was). This foreshadows (spoiler!) what we will see inside. No, there are not more full robotic looking statues inside, but this reminds me of my old toys, except 6 feet taller.
Another I Seoul U. We are spelling out Seoul very clearly, although I look like a very scuffed "S", I am actually just a very cool, cursive "S".
Once walking into the entrance, we saw boxes and old appliances. There seemed to be an abandoned or a messy officer office, probably used to greet guests back when there was more. I found a rice cooker in it.
While walking up the stairs, it was very interesting. The top had a bulletin board and with no skills in reading Korean but with eyes able to see that the paper looked old, I was able to decipher that this board might not be changed regularly. Interestingly enough, there was art on the side of the stairs that looked quite modern. The computers and gadgets in the art looked like this is what they want to place to look like, eventually.
(Also I saw a bike and I thought it was cool since it was facing a wall. My friend approached me and asked me why I was taking a photo of a bike and I shrugged and then she started taking a photo of the bike. I swear, I am a trend setter)
(pls don't hate my puns, they're objectively funny)
The view was really beautiful
unless you looked down rather than across...
can't believe poverty is ruining my photo op
(this is a joke pls don't hurt me)
I was able to cover up the poverty using the built in poverty-covering wall
(this is another joke)
they seemed to be doing some construction on the other side of the balcony
there was a bar that was to prevent people from going to the other side but they forgot one important fact - we have LEGS!
Onwards Down the Stairs: Good for Pictures, Bad for Knees
The stair art is always interesting. It's the only "current" aspect so far in this building.
Yet there are mystery boxes covered in dust.
Perhaps it was because it was a Saturday but the inner section was closed off (we tried breaking in I swear)
(the above statement is alleged)
A couple of our group continued downwards. When asked what was there they responded, "It was the same as the above floors." Perhaps they were telling the truth or found the horrific truth about the building harboring illegal chicken fights and wanted to spare our eyes from the plucked feathers.
(this is not misinformation - this is a joke pls do not believe that this building holds chicken fights I made that up and will not be held accountable if you go here and do not find chickens fighting)
To The Outdoors but Kind of Ground Level
it reminded me of a cruise ship (the top part)
most of the stores were closed, but there was this part near the end.
POV: you are me and found a funny looking face wearing a mask
(NO, it is not Nemo, it was a face there was no body)
(Note: As I keep looking at it, I'm starting to gaslight myself that this is actually Nemo)
Overall, this was quite interesting and I'm glad I went with people, half I knew half I didn't know. Just like half and half milk.
"Production is always done by Sewoon"
quote translated by Papago
A fitting ending for this piece. It seems that Sewoon wants to come back, it wants to come back as a hub where things get done. If this place was surviving before COVID, I would say COVID sped up the death process. With the lack of modern technological gadgets and closed storefronts, the only modern thing about this building was the hopes and aspirations.
